Why?

Right at this minute I'm sitting in a small classroom in Washington, DC listening to a professor drone on about statistical analysis. I have swamp-ass, my hair is greasy, I'm tired as hell and all I can think about is going home and drinking away operational definitions. The class wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for one thing. By the professor's own design our course meets one night a week for four hours. I've been a teacher for two years now and I can tell you it is not small feat for an educator to hold the attention span of a student for a solid hour, let alone 20 minutes. In fact, I can probably count on one hand the number of times I've even come close to this mythical teaching landmark. This brings me back to my main point - why in the hell would someone with a doctorate in education think it was a good idea to teach a four hour long course. It must be some rare blend of ego and a total lack of regard for sunshine and beer.
